When Italians immigrated to the US we were not welcome. We were forced to live in ghettos, faced discrimination in all aspects of American life. This holiday made us believe that we belonged, that we had contributed something important to our new homeland. Taking this holiday away would be wiping away the injustices we received and the pride we felt being American and our contributions to our new homeland.
